Windsurfing: Rutland water Wind Direction: E Wind Stength: F 4/5 Surf / Sea State: Rolling chop Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Sunny Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Easterly winds forecast, strongest in the south and west, but not much for
Fraisthorpe or Bridlington. Not wanting a long drive to the south coast, I
thought I would try Rutland Water. Turned out to be a good choice with
reasonable wind coming over the sailing area from the dam end of the
reservoir, which has an open aspect. Slight wind shadow by the shore but
this wasn't really a problem and could be avoided by walking or sailing
upwind a short distance. £10 fee was not welcome, but there was a safety
boat out, and hot showers available.
6.2m Vulcan felt reasonably powered up but it was not easy keeping the Max
2 Air upwind. Tried moving the mast forward and the harness lines back
without huge success so eventually changed to the Bee 274. This should be
faster, but didn't seem much better for staying upwind until the wind
picked up a level. Then I had some screaming runs across the reservoir,
particularly once the sailing dinghies had gone in.
As the wind had picked up, I took the Max 2 Air out again and it was
superb. Excellent fun blasting, carving about in the chop, and trying to
get airborne.
Noticed the Vulcan had very little outhaul when I was derigging; Tushingham
recommend increasing the outhaul to go upwind so must try to remember that
next time the wind is marginal.
